It's a best-kept secret...

I've been keeping it a secret, but I'm finally letting the cat out of the bag... My wet plate collodion work will be on display beginning June 22nd at Lightbox Gallery in Astoria, Oregon. The exhibit runs through July 9th. These are pieces with a musical slant, as they are showing in conjunction with the Astoria Music Festival. If you happen to be cruising through Astoria -you know, like, you're headed down to the tax-free Costco or the new Goodwill store in Warrenton? - please stop by! The reception is on June 22nd, from 3-7PM.

Lightbox Gallery is located at 1045 Marine Dr. Astoria, OR (503) 468-0238

Here's what LightBox wrote about the show:

LightBox Photographic Gallery will host the opening of "The Melodious Magical Wet Plate", with an artists’ reception on Friday June 22nd from 3-7p.m. as part of "Brush Strokes and Quarter Notes" a special event of musically themed art exhibits put together by Astoria ACT in collaboration with the Astoria Music festival.

This exhibit consists of work by Tokeland, Wa. photographic artist Marcy Merrill, who works in the historic process of the Wet Plate Collodion, dating to the 1850’s. Merrill creates from her studio gallery in Tokeland, creating pieces of photographic art from a variety of alternative methods. She is known for her work using plastic and pinhole cameras as well as a variety of off beat and unusual techniques and is recognized by LightBox as the premier fine art photographer on the Pacific Northwest coast using alternative methods.

The Wet Plate Collodion process dates back to about 1850. In the darkroom, she treats a black aluminum plate with collodion, then a silver nitrate solution, making it sensitive to light. Using a large format camera, she exposes the image. The plate is brought back into the darkroom and developed. Each plate is the actual piece that was shot in the camera, creating a one of a kind hand crafted original. "I love the imperfections in the final piece", Merrill explains.

Please show your support of this fine photographer as well as the Astoria Music Festival, Astoria Arts Community Together, and LightBox by attending the opening reception and meeting the artist. The exhibit runs from June 22nd through July9th 2012. LightBox promotes the creative photographic arts on the North Coast of Oregon. LightBox offers photographic scanning, photo restorations, archival digital printing and framing. LightBox is located at 1045 Marine Dr. in Astoria. Hours are Tues-Sat 11-5:30.
